Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1573
1804. Small 8. PCGS graded MS-62. A bright and flashy Capped Bust half eagle that shows a nice solid strike on all the devices along with bright yellow gold color. The elegance of these designs is well known, Liberty facing right with her tall cap upon her head, and the loose drapery gown she wears. The reverse shows the heraldic eagle with his wings outstretched, clutching arrows in his right claw and an olive branch in his left claw. Stars and clouds above the eagle, with the proud legend surrounding of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. These half eagles show no stated denomination, so if a person was not familar with them and their denomination or value, they would be weighted on a scale and determined what value they were for a given transaction. This is a particularly nice coin, and would serve well to represent this type issue. Only 30,475 struck. Pop 21; 25 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 8085) Value $13,000 - 14,000

Lot 1574
1809, 9 over 8. PCGS graded MS-63. CAC. PQ. A glittering choice mint state coin that offers full mint bloom, clean surfaces and a full strike. The fields are pleasing and lack the usually seen small handling marks, and one has to study hard to find any hint of adjustments (located on the extreme rim edge on the dentils). The stars and curls are crisply defined, along with all the fine feather elemants of the eagle. Close study will find traces if die clashing, mostly in the upper reverse where Liberty's head can be seen outlined. As bright and fresh as the day this half eagle left the mint. The overdate feature is also clear. Only 33,875 struck. Pop 3; 31 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 8104) Value $28,000 - 30,000

Lot 1575
1810. Small date, large 5. PCGS graded AU-58+. CAC. PQ. This one is right on the cusp of a mint state grade. Considerable mint frost resides in the protected areas and finding a few trivial points of wear on the uppermost hair curls is nearly fruitless. Hence, this coin has all the eye appeal of a Choice mint state coin but for the whisper of wear. About as perfect as a collector could hope to secure as the surfaces are free of any distracting marks and the strike is sharp. Frosty and lightly toned. Very close to Mint State. Pop 1; 45 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 8106) Value $8,000 - 8,500

1812. PCGS graded MS-63. CAC. PQ. Here is a prize example of this date which offers full mint luster, a sharp strike and gorgeous color. Excellent surfaces throughout, and a delight to examine. The reverse die shows a long arcing raised line from some unknown injury to the die itself early in its production, and this feature is seen on a majority of the 1812 half eagles. This one is boldly struck and frosty, with no detracting marks or abrasions. Scarce and quite desirable! Only 58,087 struck. Pop 48; 58 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 8112) Value $18,000 - 19,000

Lot 1577
1813. NGC graded MS-62. Well struck, frosty and untoned. There are no distracting handling marks on the surfaces. Furthermore there are no adjustment marks in the fields or on the devices that can distract the eye, perhaps a hint of a few adjustments on the dentils of the lower right reverse. A simply glorious and choice example of this sought-after type coin. The half eagle denomination was the primary backbone of our circulating coins at the time, along with the half dollar. These are the coins that the most solid banks of the day used as reserves. Hence a few choice mint state examples survived this nice, but precious few from that time period. Only 95,428 struck. Pop 56; 63 finer at NGC. (PCGS # 8116) Value $9,500 - UP

Lot 1578
1813. PCGS graded AU-55. Lovely light gold toning with pleasing surfaces and just light wear on the high points of the design. Scarce and always in demand by type collectors. 1813 saw a new style for obverse design and some revisions to the reverse design as well. Notably a rear claw was added to the eagle's grasp, and this additional claw shows up below the upper leaf cluster near the top berry. The obverse designs changed from the Large Capped Bust head to a Small Bust -- sort of a neck up view of Liberty which did not incorporate any of her shoulders or drapery into the design. This new portrait of Liberty is rather robust and matronly in appearance. Here is a nice example that is well struck and choice. Only 95,428 struck (PCGS # 8116) Value $7,000 - 7,500

1839-C. PCGS graded EF-40. Light gold toning with deeper accents tucked into the devices. A really tough Charlotte Mint issue that is seldom found in any grade, especially this attractive. Always popular for the obverse mintmark, placed just above the date. Rare and always in high collector demand. Only 17,205 struck. Pop 23; 49 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 8192) Value $3,200 - 3,300

Lot 1585
1844-O. PCGS graded MS-63. Here is a condition rarity which offers glorious mint fresh luster and surfaces that any well seasoned collector will long enjoy. Although is this a common date, not many were saved at all, let alone in such spectacular condition. The strike is sharp and the surfaces are as nice as anyone could reasonably hope to find. While slighlty surpassed by two coins with the "+" grade, and one more in gem, this is clearly one of the finer examples to come down to us today. Well struck with lovely rich golden toning. Pop 8; 3 finer, 2 in 63+, 1 in 65. (PCGS # 8222) Value $14,000 - 15,000

1853-D. NGC graded MS-61. A lovely untoned example. Better than average strike with sharp device details on Liberty's hair and the eagle's wings. The color is uniform bright gold. A few thin die cracks are seen in the stars and handling marks are at a minimum. Scarce in any mint state grade, and rarely found this nice. Only 89,678 struck. Pop 21; 16 finer at NGC. 1903. PCGS graded Proof 65+ Cameo. CAC. PQ. A lovely proof cameo. The vast majority of these proofs do not offer the desirable Cameo contrast, in fact only about a dozen or so have this feature. Most offer a more uniform, and less contrasting surface quality. This one has elegant mint fresh surfaces, and can be identified by a small copper spot on the upper left reverse. Many of these early proof gold coins have copper spots which form due to the copper allow used to strengthen the gold planchet in the alloy process. Only 154 struck. Pop 1; 6 finer for Proof Cameo at PCGS. (PCGS # 88498) Value $25,000 - 27,000
